If you could go back and spend one day with yourself when you were 18, what advice would you give to your younger self? Would you try to warn them of any future mistakes?

Man, I could write a BOOK on this one!
Some things I might not want to talk about here, but this one thing I will. When I joined the A.F. at 19, they buttonholed me and sold me a whole-life policy from NY LIfe. Cost me $20 a month and IIRC, the premiums would never increase! I'm 54 now, and at age 65 (if still alive) I could withdraw the cash value accrued at that time of.... $650,000!!!!

I would say, when you reach the age of 22 you are going to have an opportunity to have two attractive woman in your bed, so please make sure you don't drink to much alcohol and end up passing out with just a minimal memory of the sexual fun you had...
For most guys that is a once in a lifetime opportunity don't f it up... and I did...

I would have tried to convince my younger self to go for military service. The training, the experience and the discipline of military life and the opportunity to serve my country and be part of something greater. I have always regretted not doing that! I'm 39 now and it's too late. I would have liked to join the Navy or the Marine Corps (and that's pronounced "core", not "corpse", President Obama)
Hey Southron, It,s not to late I think the cut off age is 44 you can join now do the next 20 years and retire with a decent pension plus tri care for life...
In all sincerity I should have done the same, My dad was a lifer in the Army after his stint in the Navy and the GI Bill that put him through school He Retired as a Colonel in 75. When i was 17 he began to tell me to go to school and get a basic degree in business commision in the Amy and do 20 years or more if I like, I told him no way after a life of watching him come and go and kiss ass I would never be able to do the same, yet that is what I ended up doing picking a career that required me to kiss ass to move up the ladder which I failed miserably at.
Should have listened to the old man I would be 25 years in the service now and ready to collect a decent pension.. Oh Well, life is still good.

I would slip myself a note that said ("When you are in the EFHutton office in downtown Longbeach in 1986, listen to the guy to your right...and buy the Microsoft stock he wants you to put your $85 Grand into. Punch that loser in front of you for giving crappy advise!")
or maybe a note that says
("Go to MSU in Bozeman. Don't stay on the ranch. Go to school, become a Veterinarian.")
Something like that.................maybe.

Your candor is, I believe, appreciated by every member here who has ever served in the greatest Military in the world. Some of us volunteered for the very reasons you listed.... others were, um... "Ordered to report." The point is.... each of us is the person we ARE today BECAUSE of that experience, and have few regrets in that regard.I would have tried to convince my younger self to go for military service. The training, the experience and the discipline of military life and the opportunity to serve my country and be part of something greater. I have always regretted not doing that!
Yes, the training would kill you. 200 POUNDS??? Are you kidding me? Not even knowing your heighth, you should weigh about 160 to 240 to be in good health. I'm not preaching... but that puts you in the 360 PLUS range! In a way it is too late! I'm 200 lbs overweight, I have high BP. The recruiter would tell me to loose that weight and come back, otherwise basic training would probably kill me!
You need to lose that weight and "come back" before you keel over!
There are many OTHER ways that you could still "serve your country" if that is a motivating factor in how you view yourself. (And especially if it helps you "trim down" a bit!) Believe me.... if it weren't for my military experience, I'd probably be a real Azzhat!
I hope you are the "BIGGEST LOSER" on this board this year!
[You KNOW that's a reference to the popular weightloss show... right?]
Seriously, tho.... I wish you'd start working on that weight and keep us posted. Besides..... you never know! A few years from now, our military may be taking ANY "fit" man under the age of Social Security Retirement!![]()

Interesting thread I'd thought I'd revive.
If I were to go 10 years back in time, I would've convinced my younger self to have gotten that security guard card ASAP, get working, save up some money, then move out of CA to AZ or UT.
If it went down that way, I would've probably already had a BA or BS in something and life would've gotten off the ground much quicker.
But since my luck with women is about as painful as getting backhanded by one, this still remains a reality I could easily conquer in the not-too-distant future.
