    Default Death of a trucker

Not sure if this is the right place to go with my question but here it is- My brother in law who has been a truck driver for 25 plus years went to work on Sunday morning. He was on the road and had a heart attack. He was able to get his truck to the side of the road where it rolled over and no one else was involved/hurt in the accident. We believe that was due to his skill as a driver.

My question to those that may know is regarding insurance. Would the vehicle insurance pay anything to the survivers? He was working for a company though not a big company. Unfortunately he left little insurance and we are exploring all avenues to enable my sister and his son to remain in their home. Any thoughts about the insurance are appreicated. Thanks to all you truckers for what you do every day!

Check to see if he had any insurance with his carrier. Some have life insurance. If his death was due to a heart attack then the truck insurance will likely not pay off. If it was due to an accident then there is a chance that the insurance will pay off. I would talk with the safety department with his company.

If the guy had children they normally get survivor benefits from Social Security until they're 18. Check your local office.

You may also want to check with the mortgage company to see if there might be mortgage insurance. If there is then the mortgage could be paid off. If he belonged to a credit union there might be insurance. Some offer accident insurance to members. Some banks may also offer that type of insurance. If he had an occupational accident policy through his company or elsewhere, there could be additional benefits. I believe some offer a death benefit. There may be fewer, if any benefits if his death was caused by physical or natural causes. There should be benefits if it is ruled an accidental death. I would also check to see if he had been paying for insurance though his checking or savings account. Checking settlements from his employer should tell you if he had insurance through his company and was paying a premium.
