FAIRMONT -- One person has gone to the hospital after an accident on I-79. It happened in the northbound lane near the South Fairmont exit just after 3 p. m.
A Kia Spectra with Nevada tags pulled over to fix a flat tire, according to the West Virginia State Police.
A good Samaritan in a white pickup truck pulled over to help, troopers at the scene said, and a tractor trailer coming around the bend swerved to miss the vehicles on the roadside.
The tractor trailer, which was carrying 33,000 pounds of the sugar substitute Splenda, ran off the roadway, overcorrected, rear-ended an SUV, and landed on its side.
Crews are unloading the sweetener from the truck’s roof.
The Spectra’s driver was taken to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown via Healthnet, according to Marion County Central Communications.

I got tied up in the traffic for this mess. Sad part is that the wreck happened 5 miles from where I get off the interstate for our shop. Took almost 2 hours to go 9 miles through it.

yeh, that's an easy part of the road to get relaxed on, things go smooth, to smooth. Before you know it your in trouble. Point of the story, keep alert and don't let your guard down, it can bite you in the arse.

I think the point should be to not to swerve and then over correct.

I talked to my wife after I posted this information. She was only a minute or so ahead of being involved in this accident. About 1 mile before where the cars were sitting on the shoulder (she said they were sitting on the white line), my step-daugter who was driving passed that USXpress truck and then went past the cars.

If my wife had been driving, she could've easily been tied up in the mess because she rarely goes above 60-65 on the interstate. The step-daughter, though, makes me dig my nails into the dash.

And what really sux is that they will probably charge the truck driver for the failure to maintain control and fault him even though he was attempting to avoid a certain wreck had he continued along like normal. Looks like the shoulder isn't wide enough to pull off without being in the gravel.

Did the actions of the driver cause the accident or the actions of the cars on the shoulder?

I dunno man...but it sure seems like that truck should still be on it's wheels.

I see lot's of USX trucks zipping along not paying a whole lot of attention to anything. The one's with their left foot up on the dash while they drive, and chatter box away on their cell phones really really bug me.

They updated the news story. They charged the truck driver with: Failure to maintain control, driving on a suspended license and failure to provide proof of insurance. Those last 2 are VERY surprising for a USX truck.

As for the snow, ya, I'll be home tomorrow (friday). The local news is just saying "heavy" snowfall is coming between friday evening and sunday morning. Oh well - maybe we'll have a white Christmas this year.

To the police it really doesn't matter, if you wreck that truck, your going to be charged for failure to maintain control. Anymore they look to charge you with anything and everything they can think of and let the judge decide which charges should be dropped if any. At least that is what all my cop buddies tell me they have been told from their superiors. They use the excuse, if you had maintained control that truck would still be on it's wheels. You and I both know that had he kept going like he was and not swerved he'd have probably killed the occupants in the Kia since they were hanging out into the right lane some. He did what he thought was the right action, if he doesn't lose control then we probably aren't talking about this.

We would if he'd swerved (and maintained control) and caused someone behind him to hit their brakes. People gotta complain - it's our nature.

I just love seeing posts from morons on the news stories involving trucks:
    Travis
12/17/09 at 1:09 PM Report Abuse In your face, all you freaking DERELICTS that want to defend these D Bag truckers. "Camden cited Makela for failure to maintain control, and issued driving on a suspended license and failure to provide proof of insurance tickets to Cummings." The scumbag shouldnt have been driving anyways. See.. They are such good people, where would I be without them...blah blah blah. I along with everyone else would be safer.. thats where we'd be.. You morons that defend them should be cited too.. For IGNORANCE and STUPIDITY.
Of course, I had to respond in a style that he could understand:

12/18/09 at 6:47 AM Report Abuse Travis - exactly how do you think all of the crap you buy at Wal Mart & the Dollar stores get there? Do you see any train tracks running up to the back of them? No? I didn't think so.

Actually, I have a feeling that he's a ********* that failed at driving truck himself - probably couldn't figure out how to go from 5th to 6th gear. Either that, or he's just your regular run of the mill idiot. He probably can't even drive his car because of multiple drunk driving convictions, driving without insurance or just from (again) being a moron.

Where I live (Mannington, WV - outside of Fairmont) they're calling for 4-6" tonight. In Clarksburg & south, they're calling for 8-12".

    Gonna be interesting.

If you're going through southern WV, VA or NC, you'll definitely want to keep an eye on the weather - it's looking like it'll be a doozie.

Yeah my area in Central VA is calling for upwards of 18" and as little as 12". White death is upon us, the local roads are gridlocked with people running out to Xmas shop today since we won't be able to go anywhere tomorrow

That area only gets enough snow to track a blood trail.

Everything south of the 45th Parallel is allot like Ohio.
Matter of fact, we are willing to give it all to Ohio for free.

    I'm surprized Chicago was "chilly."
