Some states will throw you in jail if you are caught without liability insurance. I had a driver who bumped into a car several years back. Her insurance had been canceled so she was taken to jail.
I think that is wrong. We all should take responsibility for our own insurance, among other things. We have uninsured liability for those times when we may be involved with someone hitting our vehicles who doesn't have insurance. The way they structure these bills is that if you don't have insurance you are fined. If you don't pay the fine you go to jail. They are really side stepping the fact that if you don't have health insurance you will go to jail. While it is a good idea to have health insurance, it is not, nor should it be the business of the government to get involved. We have too much government involvement in our lives as it is. When something is mandated by the government it takes away the incentive for insurance companies to be competitive. Competition reduces costs to the consumer.
If they want to make changes will make a difference is is very simple. And we don't need a 2,000 page bill to do it. It can be done in less than a page.
Insurers must cover all including pre-existing conditions. Insurance companies are not to be restricted by state lines. If they underwrite insurance then they are no longer restricted by state lines. Insurance companies can no longer dictate to health care providers as to what tests are needed or what treatment they will pay for as directed by the patients physician. Tort reform MUST be a part of ANY real reforms. Damages must be limited or restricted so that so many unnecessary tests are not run by health care providers in order to protect themselves from litigation. I would expect that litigation is the single largest cost of health care. Many tests are run by providers in order to protect themselves in case of a lawsuit.
Any health care bill should not be much longer than the above paragraph. Nothing that is not related to health care should be allowed to piggy back this bill. It should be an up or down vote.
There is no need to make our system so complicated.
