Default Flying J Ruther Glen, Va

My girlfriend is driving back from New England and was just north of Richmond. She called me to find a place to stop for breakfast. As she was at mm110/I95 I suggested the Flying J in Ruther Glen. Food ok and the fuel is pretty cheap.

Well, the fuel was cheap but the food was horrible. She called me back and told me that the bacon and eggs were cold and not cooked. The service was simply awful and the plates and silverware were so dirty that they sent them back.

Anyone else stop there and have a bad experiance? Its been a little while since I was there but I didnt think the food or service were that bad the last time I was there.

I think all the nasties from the T/S that used to be at the 133 moved down there to the one's at the 104.

I stopped there once... usually i never stop at the 133 truck stops, i'll stop at the 89 T/A and go on, but i was tired one morning and had to pick up a load at the Delaware/Maryland line so i had to take 301 to by pass the DC Rush and i stop there to take a quick nap and it was real congested.. parking lot is tight.. and the bathrooms wont so clean.. and every time i go through there i hear those Radio Ramblers!! She's really lucky she didn't stop at the Petro instead lol.. i've heard stories about that place..

P.S. someone said the Hook always had horrible food no matter which one you go too.. I will admit this tho, i stop at the big one on I-81/I-77 (its two of them, the first one you get to going south right after the 81 77 split) and that damn pizza they had sitting out there looked good as ****!! but i kept it moving, just had got finished with a Triple Burger at Wendy's next door!! Ahh the times!!

I was at the Petro there this morning. The J hasn't been too appealing lately.

Hawk you do know the T/S at the 133 is gone right? They have a mini T/S at the East Coast but it has zero parking. Once Servicetown shutdown and then got bulldozed for a Target to go in, all the bad and nasty moved south to the 104 stops.

    That makes two of us...

After I stopped at the Petro here once, I never went to the Hook at 104 again... not to mention the Petro is on our fuel list and the Hook isn't.

I hadnt been into the t/s at mm133 for quite awhile and I was running late last year so decided to park there for the night. Imagine my surprise when I got off the highway and made the right turn right into the Target. Where did the truckstop go???? lol

They need a big sign before the exit: " Truckstop no longer here"

Yeah, a lot of guys are still heard on the CB going, "Hey, where's that T/S at the 133, I can't find it......found the Blue Beacon though." Someone local or who already knows about it will tell'em it was right where the Target is now sitting about 4 years ago. They then come back with a, "D@mn, it's been a while since I've been thru here then." Took'em almost 2 years to finally build the thing because the EPA was all over the lot about the soil. The night they shut the T/S down for good, police and tow trucks showed up at midnight as did a construction crew with jersey barriers and loaders. It was pretty much unannounced that it was closing so a lot of drivers got woke up in the middle of the night wondering what the heck was going on.

I've often wondered just how it went down. I haven't planned to stop there in a while now. But, there are times when I'll be running up 17 and plan to stop at the one, junction of 17 and 15.

One that I will stop at from time to time is the "ALL AMERICAN" not far from the T/A. I can generally find a place to park there.

I think your talking about the Quarles at Opal, VA Wind. It's actually 17 and 29 but yeah, that place seems to always be busy as it's the only real truck stop you will find if you come up 29 from say Lynchburg. Once you leave that town, there's not much that a truck can get pulled into. If your coming from 95, unless you can magically find a spot at the Hardee's, you again have no place for a truck until you get up to Opal to stop and eat. Servicetown was in a good location at the 133, last truck stop unless you could make it to Jessup, MD.

If your heading north on 95 thats about it. The BBQ at Quarles on 29 is pretty good, I thought. That chrome shop is something else for sure.

Been a while since I stopped at that J for breakfast..It was ok..Think I got something off the grill..You gotta come further south for some decent grub..Like the petro in SC(i95 ex 169) or the J in Brunswick,Ga
(ex 29)..or just stop at a waffle house..can't go wrong there..
No farting in the Hammer Lane..

I've been wondering if their BBQ was any good. Last couple of weeks I was running 29 regularly. It's very hard to get me to stop but if the BBQ is good I might. I'm a BBQ fool.

Yes, try and plan a stop there Rosty and try that BBQ. Never heard a single complaint about it. The getting in and out of the lot is another story with the amount of traffic thru that area. Seen many a wreck there with trucks pulling out in front of traffic and not realizing just how fast those cars come flying thru there. There is a sandwich shop directly across from the Sheetz at the stoplight for 17 and 29, dad used to always stop there, said they made some great sandwich's. That was just over 10 years ago though.
