Yes, I do know that the "rumor mill" is very active at any time, and even more so now... But, just this morning, I heard that TMC parked 1,000 trucks.
Did anyone else hear anything about this? Any truth to it?

TRUCKIN' AIN'T FOR WUSSES!!!

WW, go leave a post like this on the TMC thread in Driving Jobs. Your bound to get a response there.
I read a Celadon ad where they have used trucks for sale. 1100 of them to be exact, mostly 2007's. Are they downsizing or do they trade them in that often?
Don't trust anybody. Especially that guy in the mirror.
Business is still slowing down here with Big Brown. It's only a matter of time. More companies will fail. Very bad conditions right now. It's a downhill train. People wont spend their money because they're afraid and the problems get worse. People need to start spending again.
People need to have it, in the first place, in order to spend it. Unless you want to try for your share of the "bail-out" money with a robbery note on the back of your parole paper...
It was something another driver told me while at a customer yesterday morning. With 108,000 jobs gone last year, it wouldn't surprise me, but just hearing it from one person, I wondered if it was just a rumor or fact. Wouldn't be the first time I heard something like that, and it turned out to be true... Going all the way back to M S Carriers being bought up by Swift. But, the rumors have had a 50/50 track record.

Your right but even with 7% unemployment that leaves 93% employed. Even if half of them are making less the other half are unaffected. Alot of people still have money but no one will spend it right now. Either they're afraid they will lose their job tomorrow or they are waiting for deals to get even better. Bottom line is there are those who cant spend and the rest wont spend.
When their biggest customers are the auto makers what do you expect.
Most of the carriers that haul car parts are hurting. They are sucking up a lot of the brokered freight trying to stay alive. I predict one or two big ones will fail soon. Coming up with the cash to tag several thousand trucks next month will really ad to the problem.
"David Hannon -- Logistics Management, 2/18/2009
With demand and rates heading down, truckload carriers are struggling with their bottom lines and freight buyers and shippers need to continue to maintain their communication with carriers to ensure timely shipments. In fact, according to a recent survey, 21% of truckload carriers suggested that they were likely to consider liquidating in the coming six months"

Well, I talked to a TMC driver yesterday, on the CB. I asked him if they had parked a number of trucks, and he said they did. According to him, TMC is only running dedicated loads, nothing else. Seems they are under contract to haul the dedicated loads, at least till the contracts run out. Didn't sound too positive about his own job either.
That was also the only TMC truck I saw from IA all the way down into FL. Usually, I get to see several each and every day. Seems like there might be something to it.

Come to think of it, Windwalker, I havent seen any TMC trucks around lately. I usually see atleast 1 passing through here almost daily, and I havent seen any in a while now.
That doesn't sound very good coming from that driver you talked to. TMC is a pretty big company.
Unemployment numbers are based on the number of people actively doing a job search and/or receiving unemployment benefits, how they come up with that number don't know for sure. It doesn't count people who have just given up.
I haven't seen that many TMC's that much lately either.

Expediting is different, but the same, but it's different. I'm so confused.
I have a friend that just finished his training period with TMC and was on his way to get his own truck this week, i asked him about this, he said they did park a ****load of trucks but most of them were the Aero 387 Petes and their KW t-800 or whatever kind of KW that is they ran. He said they are fazing those out of the fleet and replacing everything with the Bif Petes. He said hiring has slowed down real hard but all those trucks were not parked simply because business was down. thats what he told me and he has been back and forth to De Moines several times being a trainee. Could be his info is wroing but that sounds like a pretty reasonable story since i had heard a good while back they were going to faze those trucks out of their fleet.
I did hear about a year and a half ago that TMC was working to get rid of the KW's still in the fleet. Also parking the 387 seems legit with them, heard a lot of TMC driver complaints about the trucks having all kinds of electrical gremlins in them. They loved the space they provided in the sleeper but they were always breaking down due to electrical problems.
The numbers are based on the people that are receiving unemployment benefits, not those searching for work. It does not matter if you're spending 16 hours a day looking for work, and regustered with the imployment office, if you ran off the end of your benefits, you are no longer counted.
The way the system is set up, you can start the year out with 50% unemployed. For the next 6 months, no one else loses a job, but no one gets a new job either, and by July 1, every one has gone beyond the 26 weeks of benefits, and not a single one of them is counted anymore. If no one else loses a job for those 6 months, the unemployment figures are down to ZERO.
So, the 7% unemployed only means that they are collecting benefits. How many are beyond the benefits is something they don't tell you. That's why the figures are so ambiguous. They mean very little, compared to what your government would have you believe they mean.

The only logical reason for TMC getting rid of the 387's is because they are heavier than the 389's.
It would actually help the industry if TMC did park their trucks. They are notorious for cutting rates to the point you can't make any money on them. That makes it difficult when anyone goes in behind them to get a decent rate. It would be good for the industry if TMC and a few of the other cheap freight haulers went out of business. That may be what it takes to help get rates up again. With the rates so low it is only a matter of time.
Funny, saw 3 of them this morning all loaded. 2 heading south on 17 with a load of steel rebar and 1 that was headed south on 95 under cover who was running for the Streakin Beacon. Guess they can't be hurting too bad if they are still giving truck washes.
