This is what happens when you spin a bearing at 70 mph. Now we are in Kimball Nebraska until Thursday.
Hey....what happened to FIRE??? When bearings do that on reefers or dry vans...heck even tanks and flats...there is supposed to be fire...and black smoke..products tossed out on the shoulder for 4-wheelrs to gawk at...all that stuff!!!

Oh yeah...need to reduce the pics just a little, in size. Good pic of the bearing by the way.

Pics are on photobucket so no reduction there sorryAnd that was the funny part. We had just stopped at the rest area on the Wyoming Nebraska Line. Their was no heat smell of anything burning or any outward signs on the wheel. But 15 miles on down the road poof. It flew off. But no car was hit and it even bounced over the barb wire fence into the field. So no damage to anything except the trailer of course.

The size is fine.
It appears to me that the bearings ran dry, otherwise there would be major oil all over the place under the trailer, not just that little stain on the air bag.
.
If you can't shift it smoothly, you shouldn't be driving it.
At least it is only equipment damaged! Could have been worse. Thank goodness for no fire. If you are still in Kimball Thursday PM, look for Westar Truck # 293 pulling into the little truckstop/cafe about 8 or 9 PM and holler at me. I deliver there Friday AM. Too bad I won't be there earlier, I'd let you buy lunch![]()

I would agree. At the very least, the brake shoes should be coated with oil on both the inside and outside. There just isn't enough oil there.Originally Posted by Kranky
Unfortunately, many companies are using wheel bearing GREASE now, and it means that the driver has no way to know if there is enough in the bearings or not. You can not check the level like you could with the oil. The pics do not show what type of hub cover the trailer uses. The word I get is that the bearings last just as long with grease instead of oil, but that is only true if the shop puts enough grease in the hub when they have it apart. If not, it won't last. The bearing runs dry, gets hot, ceases up, and that's the result.

Then again, maybe not. They're both diehards!

I was sitting at the Flying-j in carlisle ,PA last year about this time when I seen a driver pull out and lose his left rear drive the same way the tire/hub/axle shaft jammed up under his landing gear bending it pretty good ,and blocking the lane until he got loose ...He was p i s s e d but I reminded him how lucky he was it did not happen at interstate speed or in the boonies . I think this happens many times due to lack of lubrcation of bearings from lack of propper inspections for bad seals as opposed to defectice bearing races .
