I wondered where syncrosix was this week.
Don't trust anybody. Especially that guy in the mirror.
The article said that it is not a side-street. Unfortunately, it is far easier to turn a rig into a convertible than to avoid the problem. While it's normally a newer driver that will find himself in that situation, it is also possible for a seasoned driver to do that too., I've seen many trailers that had the tops dragging behind them. And, in far too many locations, the signs telling the driver about low clearances is much too obscure. I've seen a sign on a truck route that said the clearance ahead was only 12' 6"... Yes, on a truck route... But the sign was located BEHIND a thick, leafy bush, so that you could only read it when you were nearly even with it. How did I get to read it? I was stuck in traffic, then about four of us made a right turn before the overpass, went over a block, made a left and went over the top of the tracks, then another left back to the truck route. There, you could see an orange trailer hooked to an orange tractor, and the trailer had about six feet sticking out from the overpass before it got stuck. Yes, that WAS a truck route.
Well I have never been able to figure out how NY measures clearances. Been under more than one bridge marked 12' something. Seen a truck scrape a bridge marked 13'8" once too in that state (and the truck had 13'6" on the side for height). So go figure.
Finding the right trucking company is like finding the right person to marry. I really comes down to finding one whose BS you can put up with and who can put up wih yours.
who? oh, you meant me, right? you've missed a few letters. i did have a collision earlier this week, though, but it was when i ran over bambi in south-west colorado.
i still have my job. i know many of you are just waiting to see some news article telling of a 20-something year old swift driver from scottsdale causing some massive carnage, or probably going off a road to avoid a tipped over school bus, and dying from it. it's all good though. i thrive on other people's disdain for me.
Sonix we need to try and get you entered in the pooping contest on Stern. I bet that you could take Joey Boots and High Pitch Eric any day of the week!![]()

One of my favorite lines on City Slickers, was of Curly;
[Curly is approaching them from behind Mitch]
Mitch Robbins: Do us good? Didn't you guys see? The man was hanging the hired help!
And, did you notice his eyes? He has crazy eyes. He's a lunatic! We are going into the wilderness being led by a lunatic!
[Mitch notices everyone's terrified faces as Curly is standing directly behind him]
Mitch Robbins: He's behind me, isn't he?
Curly: I crap bigger than you!
---------------------
also...
Mitch Robbins: Hi Curly. Killed anyone today?
Curly: The day ain't over yet...

Anyway... back to the topic of this thread:
I can't say it could never happen to me but WHENEVER I come a cross a bridge that looks even remotely low, I ALWAYS slow way, way down, put the flashers on and ignore the honking of cars behind me. If my hubby is driving, I get out to watch for him. I've even climbed up the ladder on the back of our truck to get a good look at the situation.
An 11 foot bridge LOOKS LOW when you come up on it! Hell, a 13'8" bridge looks low. And especially in New York. I'm even nervous going under bridges I know I've been under. I don't trust their signs- can't trust them to be right but can't trust them to be wrong either. Almost always they'll mark it 12'6" when it's well over 13'6" but that's not something you can just take for granted.
I'm sorry- but an 11 foot bridge looks low when you're coming up to it whether it's marked clearly or not.
Anywhere in New York State and Chicago are places to be wary of low bridges... but I don't care if you're in California or Florida- you've got to be on guard! Someone could have knocked a sign down or maintenance crews could neglect to trim branches around a sign. Or there could just be no sign at all. It's our job as professionals to be aware of these things.
I'm just glad I've never hit one (we did- in one of these slow moving sessions scrape the top of the trailer about halfway down once- going maybe 2 mph- and were able to back up and get out of there without any real damage- there was a slight rise in the roadway once the trailer got 1/2 way through)- but the guy made it under the bridge- clearly he's on the far side of an 11 foot bridge in a 13'8" truck. Ridiculous!
edit- I see now that the pic on the right isn't from the story- I assumed it was. The story doesn't say how far he got.

dude, i could have used that early this morning. there was no holding it. it was one of those where you get hot flashes all over, break out in sweat in low 30 degree outside temperatures, start shaking, feel like you've been kicked in the balls, and punched in the stomach a bunch of times. i felt sooooooooooooooooooooooooo much better after taking care of business.
It was time to move this from the nOObie forum to A & E.
Hog

Tractor-trailer becomes lodged under pedestrian walkway
I can't read what the clearence sign says but something tells me it was less than 13' 6".
Incidently, how did this thread turn to the discussion of turds?
