I can't say it could never happen to me but WHENEVER I come a cross a bridge that looks even remotely low, I ALWAYS slow way, way down, put the flashers on and ignore the honking of cars behind me. If my hubby is driving, I get out to watch for him. I've even climbed up the ladder on the back of our truck to get a good look at the situation.

An 11 foot bridge LOOKS LOW when you come up on it! Hell, a 13'8" bridge looks low. And especially in New York. I'm even nervous going under bridges I know I've been under. I don't trust their signs- can't trust them to be right but can't trust them to be wrong either. Almost always they'll mark it 12'6" when it's well over 13'6" but that's not something you can just take for granted.

I'm sorry- but an 11 foot bridge looks low when you're coming up to it whether it's marked clearly or not.

Anywhere in New York State and Chicago are places to be wary of low bridges... but I don't care if you're in California or Florida- you've got to be on guard! Someone could have knocked a sign down or maintenance crews could neglect to trim branches around a sign. Or there could just be no sign at all. It's our job as professionals to be aware of these things.

I'm just glad I've never hit one (we did- in one of these slow moving sessions scrape the top of the trailer about halfway down once- going maybe 2 mph- and were able to back up and get out of there without any real damage- there was a slight rise in the roadway once the trailer got 1/2 way through)- but the guy made it under the bridge- clearly he's on the far side of an 11 foot bridge in a 13'8" truck. Ridiculous!

edit- I see now that the pic on the right isn't from the story- I assumed it was. The story doesn't say how far he got.

13'5 , 13'0 hell ill even give ya 12'6 to make that mistake, but 11'0 you have to be 1/2 a moron to not be able to see that. Sign or no sign

Hell in PA I lightly scraped a cargo container under a 14'4 bridge once.

I'm surprised PennDOT managed to figure out what a tape measure does.

Yeah I think they just look at it and guess, usually guess way to high too, so if it says anything 13'11 or lower, better be careful

    Default Late "Braking" . . uh . . Moos . .

No cattle were injured. When asked about the warning signs and the Driver stating he didn't see them, a back seat bovine stated "That's Bull."

I am surprised this bridge is still standing.........

I drove a straight truck back on 2003 and one guy came in at the end of the day with the roof peeled about 6' back. He was able to back up and go a different route, but we gave him crap about that forever!

    Default I have a question . .

Now that you've found your way on to a parkway . . good picture in this version . .

Tractor-trailer hits Hutch overpass, snarls morning rush | LoHud.com | The Journal News

A little more detail in this one . . The bridges are 9'2' and 10'11"?

. . are the bridges posted? How many warnings do you have to miss to hit a parkway bridge?

By the way, it looks like there's an opening at Werner.

I wonder how hard they laughed at his "I didn't see a sign" statement when the sign was directly above his truck...

I'm surprised it is, too. I'm also surprised that it was only straight trucks that hit it in that video.

Don't worry, there are too many of those openings caused by bridge strikes. We had one student smack a 13'4"? in Durham, NC a few years ago, and a temp driver on DG hit the 11'6"? railway bridge in Goshen, VA last year. There may have been more, though.

Big G gets the honor, this time . . Great picture in this story!

Semi gets stuck under Enid bridge Local news The Enid News and Eagle, Enid, OK

It says the driver didn't see the yellow flashing lights. Aside from keeping your eyes open some of the time, any thoughts on a more conspicuous warning system?

    Maybe a siren?
Does it take that long to look at a GPS screen to get directions? He would have been better off watching TV.
