Anyway... back to the topic of this thread:
I can't say it could never happen to me but WHENEVER I come a cross a bridge that looks even remotely low, I ALWAYS slow way, way down, put the flashers on and ignore the honking of cars behind me. If my hubby is driving, I get out to watch for him. I've even climbed up the ladder on the back of our truck to get a good look at the situation.
An 11 foot bridge LOOKS LOW when you come up on it! Hell, a 13'8" bridge looks low. And especially in New York. I'm even nervous going under bridges I know I've been under. I don't trust their signs- can't trust them to be right but can't trust them to be wrong either. Almost always they'll mark it 12'6" when it's well over 13'6" but that's not something you can just take for granted.
I'm sorry- but an 11 foot bridge looks low when you're coming up to it whether it's marked clearly or not.
Anywhere in New York State and Chicago are places to be wary of low bridges... but I don't care if you're in California or Florida- you've got to be on guard! Someone could have knocked a sign down or maintenance crews could neglect to trim branches around a sign. Or there could just be no sign at all. It's our job as professionals to be aware of these things.
I'm just glad I've never hit one (we did- in one of these slow moving sessions scrape the top of the trailer about halfway down once- going maybe 2 mph- and were able to back up and get out of there without any real damage- there was a slight rise in the roadway once the trailer got 1/2 way through)- but the guy made it under the bridge- clearly he's on the far side of an 11 foot bridge in a 13'8" truck. Ridiculous!
edit- I see now that the pic on the right isn't from the story- I assumed it was. The story doesn't say how far he got.
13'5 , 13'0 hell ill even give ya 12'6 to make that mistake, but 11'0 you have to be 1/2 a moron to not be able to see that. Sign or no sign
