    Default Truck stops/Travel Plazas

    Hey everyone,
I have to do a case study for my masters program on Flying J truck stops/travel plazas. I was wanting to gather some information from truck drivers on the subject. How well you like Flying J, how do you feel about other stops, and what might they do to improve. Any information you can give will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Tyler Crawford

Not sure about all flying J's but the one nearest us (no )won't be telling you where that is exactly. But my husband a trucker referres to it as the "Butt Crack of Truck Stops....."

No if you need me to be more specific then that...... I think Flying J's should really get an image consultant, and possible a bulldozing team together..

Anything you do to improve has to be a step up from there.

Hope that Helps you out Tyler.
    PS.....

    Welcome ta CAD.

My company recently switched our fuel cards to TCH, which is owned by Flying J. I still go to the T/A's and avoid the J's like the plague. Their food is definitely over-priced. An average meal with a drink will easily run you over $10. I normally eat at mom & pop truck stops and rarely spend over $5 for a complete meal.

One of the worst truck stops in the United States is the Flying J at Carney's Point, NJ. You could do a study on that dive alone, and have enough material to carry through your Doctoral dissertation.

Care to elaborate regarding the theme of your case study? The Flying J as a whole is a broad subject.

Well you have your work cut out for you there! You are at the right place for firsthand info. There are many drivers on this board that are at Flying J's on a daily basis.

As for me, I am a local driver and don't have much interaction with truck stops anymore. I will however point out that you may find it easier to analyze the company as opposed to analize.

    Good luck!

The truck stops in Gary, Ind. are gonna be disappointed.

Oh c'mon now. The T/A in Gary has gotta be one of the best in the country...

Another issue with the J's is that anytime I've tried to get a shower, there's usually a wait of at least an hour. Also, their coffee sucks.

The one thing that always made me laugh at all large t/s is the large video game rooms ...1 for the most part you can buy video game systems that are just as good as anything in the arcade ...But the biggest question I have is ...does a driver who sits for 75% of the day need to spend the remaining 25% sitting at the buffet and playing video games...To me with all the new BS dot "health" regs you would think a gym more popular ...But nope ...and then you have the guys/gals that waddle their way at a pace that would put a turtle to sleep sporting lovely signs of poor circulation with black/blues on their lower legs if these people don't have diabeaties i'd be surprised, and if they never get it I'd be shocked ...

It doesn't matter what brand of truck stop you go to, every single one of them could stand improvement in one area or another. The Flying J at Ellsworth, WA is on a par with the very best Pilot, and I have not found as much mold in Flying J's showers as I have in T/A's. There are Flying J's like the one at North Platte, NE that need to triple the size of the truck parking, and make it far less cramped. But, it would seem that no truck stop has enough parking. By 10 PM, trucks are burning as much fuel circling the lot, looking for a place to park as they did on the hiway getting to the truck stop.

The food at Flying J could be improved, but driver's attitudes need improvement as well. When we talk about diabetes and heart disease, they need far more of the dard green veggies, and other things that do not clog the arteries. But, drivers need to be far more aware of what kinds of foods to eat in order to prolong their jobs as long as possible, as well as their lives. Piling it high with pasta is not going to do that for you.

There are locations that certainly could have been laid out far better, like the one in Gary, IN. But at the same time, I believe the guy that laid out the T/A in Gary, IN should be residing in a "RUBBER ROOM", if he is not yet. Complete with a straight jacket.

I didn't know they were truck stops, I thought we were infringing on the RV stop.

All thy care about is that your fuel transaction goes thru, you buy some high priced junk and get off the lot.

Apparently, I don't share the same opinion of the other posters here.

For the last 5 or so years we fuel almost exclusively at Flying Js.

I pay for fuel with a check- and Flying J is the easiest to use a check at if you're in their check cashing system. I'm on with NATSO check-link, too, but trying to get a Pilot to put the check through right is a painful process.

I've always thought J's had decent showers. Certainly as good as (or as bad as- depending on your pov) any other truck stop.

When it comes to the restaurant, what can I say? It's a truck stop... and you're complaining about bad food? There isn't a major chain truck stop that has decent food IMO any more. It's just something to put in your mouth. But if you're a frequent fueler at Flying J, they send you coupons which will buy you free meals.

I used to think Petro's Iron Skillet was a good restaurant but that changed a few years ago. Now they are just as bad as the rest of them.

You can usually get to a decent restaurant and not have to eat at the truck stop at all- but I've found that most truckers aren't that enterprising about their meals and would rather just spend time with other truckers.

I'm not a big rah rah cheerleader for Flying J- but if you're looking for an honest assessment of their facilities from someone who uses them on a regular basis, as well as an honest assessment of other truck stops from my use of them over the years as well, you can feel free to PM me and I'll help you as best I can.

LOL.....It's ELLENSBURG WA !! Only reason I ever stopped at E-burg was to eat at the restaurant next to it, "Leatons". But even that has changed...last time I was there it was called Buzz Inn or some such name.

But you are so right about the Tacoma location!!! Bulldoze that sucker to the ground....move it to a new location.

    Take that "J" !!!
