    Default WTF is a ...

Last week I was running some side-roads in PA. All over the place in small towns, they have signs that are worded something like this:

Brake retarders are prohibited in township limits

Ok - so just WTF is a BRAKE RETARDER? A retarder is something that limits your brakes. So, does that mean they want us to come through the town with limited braking?

I know that they were talking about engine brakes, but, because of their idiotic wording, I never shut my engine brake off once. I was HOPING that a cop would pull me over. That'd be such an easy legal battle to win.

Pretty much the same for towns that post signs saying that Jake brakes are prohibited. My truck has an engine brake, but it's not a Jake. Does that mean I'm exempt there?

How bout Mass. On the interstates. "Trucks Prohibited From the Left Lane"
Doesnt that mean. Trucks must remain in the left lane???
Any other state would say "Trucks Prohibited In the left lane"

If I had some extra money lying around, I'd buy a single drive axle tractor and a single axle trailer. I'd then put super singles on the entire thing, and drive around Georgia and Florida in the left lane and see if they tried to bust me for the "All vehicles with more than 6 wheels prohibited from left lane".

One of the many things I hate about the Northeast since I went up to Conneticut last Thursday is that one minute trucks are prohibited in the left lane and the next it ends and then they are probihited. Please make up your mind, it's tiring changing lanes every few miles.

As a general rule...with the exception of a few states. If the highway is 6 lanes or more....3 or more each way. Then trucks are prohibited IN the left lane. If its 4lanes 2 each way then there is no prohabition.
You probably were going from 3lanes to 2lanes then back again.

It did get annoying pretty quick. Other than that being in the Northeast is pretty fun!

Just take it to mean "JAKE BRAKE", "ENGINE RETARDER", "EXHAUST BRAKE", etc.

Towns in WI have signs that say "NO ENGINE BRAKE EXCEPT IN EMERGENCY". I would like to know what kind of emergency would permit the use of a brake that slows the truck down, but will not stop it. Horn doesn't work and you have to make noise so that he 4-wheelers know you're coming??? I mean, if you have an emergency that you MUST stop for, and the foot brake is not going to do it, what will the engine brake do? And, by the time you flip the switch on, how far into, or through, the emergency will you be?

Take it as "THEY KNOW WHAT THEY WANT, BUT DON'T KNOW THE PROPER TERM OR USE OF THE EQUIPMENT".

    and they will rebuild them.
    Destroy the farms...
and grass will grow in the streets of the cities.

Destroy the economy of the blue-collar worker...
and grass will grow in the executive offices.

    The bill has come due.

I know what they mean. However, their terminology is waaay off the mark. So, if you got a ticket from a local yokal for running your engine brake when the sign explicitly says "Brake Retarder", exactly how hard do you think it would be to get the charge thrown out?

To the best of my knowledge, I've NEVER heard of a Brake Retarder. Wonder if the PA DOT could point that piece of equipment out to me?

Remember, an engine brake, engine retarder, jake brake, etc - we know what that is and what it's for. However, with their naming of it, that piece of equipment (if it exists) would be to retard the operation of your brakes. That's what they call it.

As for WI's signs - I have no problem with that. Unless something happens EXTREMELY fast, I can reach up and hit the Engine Brake switch to ASSIST in slowing my truck down. In an emergency stop, any extra braking is a Godsend.

Better than the Island of California, where you don't know what exit number you are at, because most of the exits don't have numbers....

    Ha ha...never thought of that.
I suppose they'd have to list the exit in 40 different languages to be all PC and sheit.

Don't they usually say engine retarder? I can't say I remember seeing a sign that said "brake retarder".
