    Default Blew a steer tire

I've always feared a blown steer tire and Friday nite it happened for the first time. While traveling at 65 mph I heard it starting to whine and less than 10 seconds later it came apart down to the rim. The truck shook and vibrated but did not dive like I thought it would. I used the trailer brake to slow the truck and work it to the shoulder, I was afraid it might dive if I stepped on the brake pedal. Kinda scary at first but turned out uneventful. The blown tire ripped out the air line to the brake chamber so all in all it cost me about 2 1/2 hours. Not bad, considering no one got hurt.

Something I've often feared happening too. So glad things turned out good, and tragedy was averted. Buy a Lottery ticket sometime today Bro..

We had a driver lose a steer tire a few months ago. They also lost the left side of the truck's hood in the process. Glad to see you made it without anything major happening.

I blew a steer tire about 10 years ago. It happened very suddenly. It messed up my right fender and supports.

    Blew a steer tire
Did you manage to get all of the road grime off your lips yet?

    Sorry - couldn't resist it.

The only exciting thing you have to tell us, is that you blew a steer, means that you did everything right.Â* As in, "ANY LANDING YOU CAN WALK AWAY FROM IS A GOOD LANDING".Â* Golfhobo and I have had a discussion about using the trailer brake to stop when you blow one, and from what he said, I sure hope he never does.Â* I think it should be written into the CDL manual for everybody.Â* I've blown two now.Â* But I cheated on the second one.Â* I had just parked the truck and was half way into the fuel desk with a comcheck when I heard the boom.Â* 'Hmmm...Â* Sounds like someone blew a tire'Â* And, when I got back out to my truck, I found out it was me.Â* But, the first one firmed up my grip on the wheel.

i blew out the driver side steer tire a year ago while traveling eastbound on i-8 in arizona. was at the 19 mile marker when it happened. the steering wheel was already turned slightly to the left because it was around the left curve. needless to say, my ass went off the road and almost biffed it into the mountainside on the left shoulder. the blown tired jacked up all kinds of stuff. the airline was busted in two spots, all the plastic underneath was gone and in the road, rim was bent, and the driver side notch that the hood is secured in to was also gone. i drove it back to the phoenix terminal with bungees holding down the hood. somebody else re-powered the load.

all in all, it went down as an unpreventable.

Last steer tire I had blow out on me was a super single, on a 1979 Paystar5000, with power steering by "Armstrong". Good thing the speed limit was only 55 back then..and the truck could only do 45...cuz I liked to have crapped myself trying to get the truck stopped in a straight line!!!

For the un-initiated...."Armstrong" power steering...........The stronger your arms...the better your power steering!!!! :|

Losing the tread on a drive tire can do a number as well.Â* In CA, I threw off the tread from the right-rear-outside drive.Â* It took off all the electrical cable under the trailer...Â* No lights, no ABS, nothing.Â* No, you won't go off the road, but at night, to all the traffic behind you, you SIMPLY DISAPPEAR.Â* Shorted wires in the cable also meant breakers popping open and reseting until I could get it off the road and shut it down.I've never had the tread come off on a steer, but I would imagine it could happen too.Â* I'm told that one of the ways to prevent the steer from blowing is to make certain they you have the proper air pressure.Â* No, it may not stop you from losing a steer, but any tire that is low on air is subject to failure.Â* A very good practice is to use a GUAGE and check your pressure every morning, hazmat or not.Â* You want to do it in the morning so the temp of the tire is AMBIENT, not in the evening when the tire is hot from running.Â* I find that I have to adjust my air about once a month.Â* Usually, add just a little.Â* It's cheap insurance.

Do you think the steer tire will call him in the morning? Did it promise it wouldn't AIR in your mouth?
Don't trust anybody. Especially that guy in the mirror.

I was asleep in the passenger seat of my trainer's truck back in the day when he blew the right front steer. Talk about a rude awakening.

That 19 fatal bus wreck near Dallas had an an illegal retread steer failure.

The radio guy that has the Trooper Monty guy as a guest has a (dated) blown steer video on his website. Interesting and informative. If I could think of the guys name, I'd link it.

Yes, it was the first date, wizeass . .
