You forgot another option to your poll: "I don't care what other companies do" (or something similar).
I'm not an o/o and could care less if other companies drop their speed. It's just more trucks that I can go around.

I'm amazed that it took so long. what is going to be funny is watching all the job hoppers try and stay ahead of this..The ink won't be dry on the applications when the speed they hired on for drops like a stone! I'm waiting for the 55 limits again.

I've wondered about that too, Fozzy.
Yet, IIRC, the old "double nickle" didn't really seem to slow many people down. Now, the days of "Smokey And The Bandit" are clearly over. By and large, the old days of the Owner/Operator Chicken Haulers have gone the way of the 8 Track stereo.
Still, with all of the trucks coming up from Mexico, and the vast majority of 4 wheelers, I'm thinking that it would make the highways more chaotic than they are now.
[quote="Useless"]Well, I'm not going to rant over this.. but its time that we as a country OWN our selfishness and ignorance over how things work. We as a "supersize" country by some of the most large ignorant vehicles on the planet and drive them like we are late to some sort of emergency. It has cost us a lot and oil is like a drug. it's time for some rehab! We need to do things smarter and use our heads and stop demanding that we can do what we want when we want to do it.. it has cause a lot of problems.Originally Posted by Fozzy

None of the events that are happening right now, from the skyrocketting prices of oil, to the melt-down in the mortgage and credit markets, just popped up overnight. The writing has been on the wall for several years now.
Yet, people continue to drive large SUV's and gas guzzling pick up trucks because "they gotta' be stylin' down the road' to get to the grocery store or MalWart, the world's largest retailer of cheap plastic crap that was once made here in The United States..
Dr. Allen Greenspan, who will have to go down in history as being one of the most intellectually gifted economist in history, used to talk about the economic collapse that would occur "If we ever stop spending money that we don't have on things that we don't need"
Well, that day is nigh, and the problems with real estate forclosures, which are already very problematic, have not even begun to reach full impact, and it's already effecting credit markets, the value of the dollar abroad, and foreign economies as well. This, combined with higher fuel prices, is bleeding into other credit markets as well....vehichle payments, credit card delenquencies.... every other form of credit market, too!!
Folks, REGARDLESS of who is elected President in November, we are in very serious trouble, and it won't go away anytime soon!!
As the dollar continues to drop on the foreign markets, the rises in the prices of crude oil are going to become even higher, and the spikes will be more pronounced!!
People were warned, they just refused to listen.
In answer to your post Flood, yes, I see more companies turning trucks back. The company I drive for turned theirs back from 75 to 65 in November.
Now before anyone says I'm unAmerican, I served in one capacity or another for 20 years in the Army.
That being said....Usless, this posts topic was a simple question on wether anyone else thought that companies would turn trucks down. There was no need to turn it into a political rant. I agree with you completely that the mess this country is in was caused by gluttony. People had to have bigger and better than their friends. SUVs are the biggest waste on the road, jacked up pickups are an extension of the little pepe syndrome and when everyone kept telling me to buy a house, I refused.
I own an 04 cavalier bought new that year, I bought my fiancee an 05 pt cruiser for christmas of 04. I have about $20,000 in credit avalible on cards with about $2,000 used and I'm STILL waiting for the housing market to hit rock bottom before I buy. So you see, not everyone was foolish, but please quit turning every post into a rant. I quietly agree with you on many things, but it gets old.

I would imagine that quite a few fleets will be slowing down as a matter of survival, but to correct the original premise:
Con-way (Freight) trucks went from 65 to 62.
CFI/Con-way Truckload trucks went from 70 to 65, not 62.
Just FYI.

i stand corrected XM didn't say that it was only conway freight. all thay said was conway was turning the fleet down from 65 to 62Originally Posted by VitoCorleone99
Sounds like all they really did was turn them back to where they used to be. When I went to work for CFI in 97'......the entire fleet was set at "65". And back then...they had a real "fuel" bonus and a lot of the guys would run down below 60 to get the bonus.
Forrest Gump was right....and some people literally strive to prove it.....everyday. Strive not to be one of "them".... And "lemmings" are a dime a dozen!

They lost my original "avatar"....oh well.

If the trucks go slower, will it take longer to make runs and increase payroll expense>? Seems like they've done their homework and the savings might outweigh the payroll. All I know is I do 75 from nevada to iowa, because in long haul otr, that 12mph would mean a lot of my wasted time.
Mud, sweat, and gears
How would it increase payroll expenses? The drivers are still paid by the mile, not by the hour.
In fact, it would decrease the payroll as they can't do as many miles per week.

Aren't the company freight drivers paid by the hour? We're not talking about Conway truckload. But a lot of the freight goes to/from shippers, lots of times on roads with speed limits under 60. Maybe I need glasses, I dunno.
