Here is an update on last nights horrific EMS crash in west central Ohio. A total of 5 people were killed when that ambulance was struck by a semi-truck when Antwerp EMS was transporting two victims from an earlier crash. The Ohio State Patrol is reporting that the ambulance was traveling south on the county road that had stop signs posted for north-south traffic. No stop signs were posted for the semi trailer that was heading east,
The ambulance, with 4 Antwerp Emergency Medical Services members aboard, was transporting two victims from a previous car crash to a hospital. While enroute to the hospital, they were slammed into by the semi headed east on County Road 176 in Crane Township, about 65 miles southwest of Toledo.
The crash remains under investigation. As stated, the ambulance was traveling south on a road that had stop signs posted for north-south traffic. No stop signs were posted for the semi trailer heading east, Authorities have not said whether the ambulance's emergency sirens and lights were turned on. The ambulance burst into flames on impact.
3 of the 4 EMS members and the 2 victims from the earlier crash died. The fourth worker and semi driver were taken to the hospital.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol released the names of the victims from the crash. They include:
Antwerp EMS personnel killed in the line of duty:
-Sammy R. Smith, 64;
-Heidi L. McDougall, 31;
-Kelly J. Rager, 25, all of Antwerp.
Additionally, the civilians killed were Robert L. Wells, 64, and Armelda Wells, 60, both of Hicksville, Ohio.
A 4th EMS worker, Matt McDougall, 31, also of Antwerp, and the driver of the semi, Gerald D. Chapman Jr., 54, of Bryant, Ind., were both transported from the scene.
