Well, you can't say Dubya doens't pay his bills to his master Dick Cheney!

Ford may have done the country SOME kind of favor by pardoning Nixon, but he never pardoned (or commuted the sentences) of the "underlings" who actually did the deeds of Obstruction of Justice.

Dubya has once again shown his contempt for the rule of law, the Constitution, and the will of the people (even his own party) in commuting the sentence of Scooter Libby.

I'm well aware that he had the legal and Constitutional "right" to do what he did. But, as someone said, there are hundreds of people serving jail terms today for the same offenses of lying to the FBI and obstructing justice. Most of their terms are no more or less than what Scooter got!

This is so blatantly and transparently "totalitarian*" it is scary!

With an approval rating for Bush "below freezing" as they are calling it on the news, I'm not surprised. There are few left in this country who can or will actually defend his maniacal decisionmaking.

His "main" reason for the commutation, was that the sentence was "excessive." Yet, it falls squarely within the sentencing guidelines for such a crime.

On a political forum that I visited just tonight (to see what was being said,) someone asked the question: "Why is Libby more important to the Republicans (actually only the administration) than two Border Patrol agents who are rotting in jail?"

My first thought, and the consensus of the replies, was: Because the Border Patrol agents don't know where all the bodies are buried in Cheney's back yard!"

This is indeed, a SAD way to run a country! ANY country. And it is clearly a downright CRIMINAL way to run THIS one!

I truely don't know which is worse.... the weak kneed Democrats who won't impeach him.... or the "battered wife" codependant Republicans who defend him?! (what's LEFT of them!)

I LOVE my country, and its FLAG, and its PROUD military men and women! And it breaks my heart and soul to see us all stand by and let this man trample everything our forefathers fought and died for!

"WE THE PEOPLE" means NOTHING anymore! (If it ever did.) And, though I always understood it, I now FEEL why "Jesus wept!"

Ha Ha! Thanks for jumping in, Hoggie, though I'm not sure who you are referring to. It's been along time since I enlisted in the Force, and I don't remember if us lowly enlisted types had to swear such an oath. But, I'm pretty sure officers have to. And all Representatives and Senators do (I believe.) I'm not sure about STAFF members like Scooter. But, they certainly SHOULD! And then there's the "big one" that the President swears on National T.V. before the whole nation! :shock:

Courage..... that is what is lacking these days! I knew it was something. The willingness to lay your career on the line, or protect it, by standing up for the Constitution that our country was founded on!

JFK said: "We will do these things NOT because they are easy, but because they are HARD!" (at least that's the way I remember it.) It has just become TOO "easy" to subjugate the principles that our ancestors have DIED for, to protect our own "personal" interests in this government, AND in this country!

Besides the fact that I believe Bush stole the first election (through electoral manipulation, voter disenfranchisement, and Judicial technicalities from the very beginning.... there was ONE big thing that stood out in his early years. Something that stuck in my craw, and turned my stomach sour.

That was the "propagandisation and politicisation of the death of Tillman! Even when things were still going somewhat well for Bush, he felt the need to LIE to the parents of this brave soldier and his family, and LIE to the American public about how he died! They gave him a MEDAL of HONOR (without due process) for being killed in a horrible accident of fratricide and command incompetence!

They "USED" his popularity for the purpose of enlistment propaganda and mollification of the populace. In doing so, they not only abrogated any right they had to "represent" the good and faithful citizenry of this country, they also tarnished the valor of all those who lie under white crosses in Normandy, Iwo Jima, and at the bottom of Pearl Harbor!

American History is resplendant with tales of true HEROES! And I'm not saying that every white cross even represents one. They DON'T! There are those who sport a special designation to attest that they WERE. Others, are just casualties of war. Tillman was a casualty of incompetence in a war of incompetence! I loved the man. I certainly call him a Patriot for what he sacrificed for this country. But, he is no Medal of Honor recipient by any stretch of the imagination!

I only wish our President had had the "Courage of Oath" to stand up and tell the truth, or say nothing at all! But, he doesn't. He dons a flight suit that he didn't even deserve, and gets dropped off on a flight deck that is as unfamiliar to him as the bay of Nantucket is to ME, and trumpets that our "Mission is Accomplished!" And I throw up! And 3,000 dead American soldiers later, he says we will try a different tack, because his tired old line of "stay the course" is no longer popular nor effective.

Mark my words, that before his Presidency is over, he will have us actively engaged in a withdrawal of forces from Iraq.... and he will say it was HIS idea all along! And "no spin" O'Reilly will help him SPIN it to his advantage! It has allready begun!

I want to WIN this war against terrorism as much as anyone here. But, I want to do it with dignity. I would rather go OUT in a blaze of courageous glory than to "win it at all costs" when those costs are the freedoms we cherish, and the principles upon which our great nation was founded!

I am not afraid to DIE! I am disgusted at the thought of living without the "Courage of my Oath!" And I am sickened by a President who doesn't know the meaning of EITHER!

Oh...hell...all this time ...

I thought what Libby did (and it's pretty hard to dispute the fact) was to give false information to a grand jury. If he did so deliberately, that's perjury pure and simple, regardless of what he was perjuring himself about.

Libby was convicted of one count of obstruction, two counts of perjury and one count of lying to the FBI.

They sent Martha Stewart to jail for charges of lying to federal investigators and obstructing justice.

I believe I would disapprove of this Pardon regardless of Political office.

But please Pardon me if you will...because...I blame my honest recollections for any misstatements on a faulty memory.


That being said...I do not see justice to expect a man of this caliber to have to reside in the same prison with regular liars and scum. We really desperately need a new 5-star Gentleman's Facility. I'm am afraid however it could quickly be filled with most of our Current Administration. Hell...here is a thought...lets convert the White House....to a correctional facility. :?

We actually invaded the WRONG COUNTRY in 2003. Since 19 of the 20 hijcakers of 9-11 were Saudi's we should have gone SOUTH out of Kuwaitt instead of Northwest into Iraq we should have gone into Saudi Araribia. One small problem there we would of been fighting our own top of the line Equipment meaning F-15's M1A2 and Bradleys would have been interesting in the least to see who would have won that one. As for Bush commuting Libby's sentance he just lost any political capital he had left with Congress he had left. Mitch Mc Connell the Minority Leader of the Senate told him last month not to do it and the Minority leader of the house said the same thing also.

We have a President that called the Constitution of the United States the very document this nation is based on and I am quoteing him ver batem here Just a Piece of PAPER Yooper that is what he called that scared piece of Parchment that the founding fathers like Washington Jefferson Franklin and Adams and Hamilton wrote and gave to us over 200 years ago.

Yoopr hit is dead on, even if it was a cut-and-paste job. As far as pardoning convicted criminals, all presidents do it. Clinton simply took it to new heights that will never again be seen. And yeah, Clinton was a scumbag, although I will certainly admit that he was a smart one. He didn't garner the monicker "Slick Willie" for being a short-bus rider.

And speaking from a neutral standpoint, Bush did not pardon Libby. He commuted the 31 month prison sentence, of which Libby would probably have served 12 months, if that. Libby still has probation, still has a felony, and most important of all, is still responsible for his $250,000 fine. That's hardy a pardon and this is not the political whirlwind that democrats seem to think it is. In the overall scheme of things, it shouldn't even be a blip on the radar...it was that minor. But in today's political climate, even a sneeze will garner front page headlines.

Well, Scooter is still a lawyer with a felony conviction, which is as bad as a trucker with an "abandonment' decision.

Neither one is going to be able to do what they used to do. Ever again.

Heck, a trucker with a drug conviction is more likely to drive again than LIbby is to practice as a lawyer again.

I have to agree with you. Thats a pretty big punishment for a lawyer and then have to pay a $250,000 fine.

My opinion is that Bush did nothing wrong, and in that case to the American people he can't do anything right. So who does he really have to answer to on this decision?

Excuse me Iron Eagle but it is within Our Constitution(Which I hold near and dear to my heart as a combat vet who has lost buddies and relatives who have died for this Great country as I'm sure you have also) to Pardon and Commute a sentence.
Bush didn't exonerate all of Libby's sentence-Just the Prison time and one other thing-One, or possibly more Jurors, said that they HOPED that President Bush WOULD Pardon Libby

I stand corrected. I need to looked closer at the news and I have been preoccupied with the 4th events, my niece coming for her wedding at my Farm, and for some reason, I heard Libby was Pardoned.

I do agree with the commuting of the sentence, but I doubt I would still be willing to agree with a full Pardon...which I understand is not ruled out yet.

And then...I could just stick to doing jokes...he heeeeeeeeeeeee...and not worry about crap like this all together.

Yoopr I do not want ot get a mod mad at me but remember this about Bush he has taken away Hebas Corpus the foundamental right of ALL good Legal systems. All someone in the DOJ has to do is declare anyone an Ememy Combatant and off you go with NO WAY TO FIGHT THE ChARGES IF ANY brought against you. You can not even have a lawyer file a Hebas Corpus which means where is the body in latin in court since he Decided that does not apply to Combatants at all. He was told by the leaders of his own party in Congress do not do anything with Libbys sentance at all yet him being the Decider did what he did. Yes I can not stand the man for the simple reason he lost his focus and went after the wrong man that being Hussian which was contained instead of keeping after Bin Laden and finshing his butt off.

I think Bush went easy on Enemy Combatants that get to go to Club Gitmo, In any other country they would just get a bullet to the forehead. Right now Iran is paying a bounty for killing American Troops but we have to make sure our enemy's get special treatment. Thats what would happen to our troops if they are captured by our enemy's, right? Don't think so. Thats the whole reason why we can't win the war on terrorism, we don't want to hurt someone's feelings. This country has gone to SH*T on this politically correctness and not wanting to offend someone so some special interest group can scream "I'm outraged!".

As far as Bush, wait let me get this correct. Congress taking Habeas Corpus away is a dam good thing. Enemy Combatants don't deserve ANY rights. Lets also be honest, how many American's have been mistaken for Enemy Combatants?
