    I remember our first Fire Engine was a hand crank REO. You had to use a hand crank off the flywheel to start the old bugger. (pucka pucka pucka chug chug poof black smoke) :?
    By the time I was old enough to ride along and help fight the fires...(mid-60's) our Fire Engine went like 45mph. We all rode along holding on to the sides and back of the Truck. We are rural...so most fires were 10-15 mles away. But what took so long was not chugging our way to get there...but trying to find it. We didn't have radio communications back then...like now. We'd drive along looking for black smoke.

    It was always a surround and drown opperation. Most places were about burnt to the ground, by the time we showed up. We also didn't have much water...or access to water unless you had a good well, stream, or pond.

    I'll never forget our gear either. Firefighters fight fire with water...soooooo their gear needs to be rubber...right? :evil:
    Ever see what fire does to rubber? :?

    Of course our Rescue was just as Medieval. We use to think you treated a drowning victim, by pumping their legs...like a hand water pump.
    Our idea of CPR was slapping and yelling at the victim...shouting don't you die on me dammut. :evil:

    REO Speedwagon just recently signed a contract to do a "Kaopectate" commercial;

    Their featured song will be "Take It For The Runs!!"

    We just take ours for the Run's on July 4th anymore.

    In the middle you see the Truck I first rode on. We have to push start it most of the time now.
    At least now we get a crowd to help.
    I'm marching in the bottom left...with my crew.
    You can see the front of our 6 year old Fire Engine.
    We just bought 2 new Kenworth 2000 gal. Water Tenders.

    My Dad was the first full-time Deputy in our County. You can see the Pursuit Squad Car...hehehe...we even had a notorius resident here...a guy named Al Capone. They use to run booze from Canada to here, then run it down to Chi-town. (a little before my Dad's time)

    this is a lousy photo for any UNSUB ID...but I could give you a pretty good discription for your Forensic Artist. Some of those CSI computers might help reconstruct...if you take my left shoulder and general discription.
    Anyway...I'm a white shirt waaaaaaaaaay in the back row. I always wear a hat and dark sunglasses in Parades...so old girlfriends don't recognize me, and come after child support. :? :P
