Thats an awfully short list! LOL! On that list, I'd say Audie Murphy. On my list, there are too many to really count.

sorry for brevity on list mate, just when british list was made up we had options like john lennon an insult to great british heroes of the past i thought. i chose list because they are all americans of outstanding physical courage, intellectual ability and their love of their country. admittedly a whole plethora of american legends are missing, but thats where you guys come in and tell me who is the greatest. ps when british poll was out i voted for Queen Elizabeth 1, without her we would all be speaking spanish. you and i!

Oh man this is hard. There are so many to consider. I voted for George Washington as he had such a huge legacy in forming our country. But really any of the founding fathers would be a good pick as well.

Other Presidents to consider would be Teddy Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman, John F. Kennedy, & Ronald Regan.

U.S. Military heros could be Andrew Jackson, Ulysses S. Grant, Teddy Roosevelt, Robert E. Lee (yes he led the Confederacy but had an outstanding military career before then), George Patton, Douglas McArthur, Dwight Eisenhower, and any member of the Tuskeegee Airmen among others.

Inventors and leaders in industry like Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Eli Whitney, Alexander Graham Bell, and the Wright Brothers.

Martin Luther King & Billy Graham could well make this list too.

    Just too many to name.

Every American is great great actions do not mean ones great. If you live the dream of america your great. But I would have to say

    Ronald Regan great american,
Teddy Roosvelt was the only great Roosvelt. FDR was a commie.

    Military Patton, Bradly, Chesty Puller.

Lawmen of the west Porter Rockwell He killed more men then Doc Holiday Bat masters and wyett Errp combined.

So you have to be specific on what catagory you want greatness from.

the one who saved my life in the military
Have NO British heroes in my book-Long ago relative on my Dad's side was Brewster who was on the Mayflower fleeing British Tyranny.
I guess(there are too many to list) that if I had to choose one it would have to be George Washington who took a rag tag volunteer Army to defeat the British who at the time were the strongest force in the world, against all odds.

IMHO the greatest Americans are the ones who work to provide for themselves and their family and who raise their children with all the love they can.

This is also the greatest Brit, Spaniard, German, Chinese, etc.
Finding the right trucking company is like finding the right person to marry. I really comes down to finding one whose BS you can put up with and who can put up wih yours.

here is another thing not everyone can be a Brit or a swede or Dane or a German etc.... But everyone can be an american. the only way I could be a brit or a canadian or a swede is if I was born there, here you come here and you melt in to the country and become an american. That is what is so great.

My father took me to Arlington and the wall and showed me the graves of the men who died. and you know what he told me the men who died and are rememberd here may have came from Nationalitys from all over the world but they all died an American Hero. Show me any other country that can claim that.

I think thats a rather narrow view, All young men of all nations miltaries where gathered together died for their causes and they were all heros in my book. Even on the losing sides, war creates a brotherhood and it is that for which they kill and die for. Politicians and Generals fight wars on paper and look at them as pieces on a game board. The soldiers are fighting for each other where the "metal meets the meat". You should read a few books like Anthony Beevors "Stalingrad" and "The Forgotten Soldier" by Guy Sajer and even Adolf Gallands, "The First and the Last". All of these books are so personally moving that you can see that all of these people are just alike in almost every respect. History is written by the victors and unfortuneately they tend to color and sanitize things to make their actions seem "better" that their enemies. History eventually proves this as folly.

I voted for Washington but like others said that's a short list.

I don't have much love for McArthur because after the Japs surrendered he went over there and wallowed with them I think Patton was my favorite general and Ronald Regan for president.

Dugout Doug did a fine job in Japan but the early years of the war he was a bafoon!. And again, the comments wallowing with "them" is just silly and not relevant nor helpful to the discussion. Right now the Japanese are one of the ONLY allies we have left in that area who pack the right weaponry and attitude to keep the N. Koreans and Chinese from starting too much BS. Due to their constitution (set up by fledgling government with Dugout Doug) they are restricted to spending only a VERY small percentage of their GNP on their defense forces. They are however very successful in their economy and that adds up to a HUGE amount of money. They are ALSO one of the countries sending troops to the war on terror to help the US.

Suuure they do! The black Americans weren't even really considered Americans until the 1960's and then it was more or less forced at the end of a federal troop's gun barrel. The things about other countries not allowing others to become "real citizens" is not really true, they aren't as stuck up as Americans and allow DUAL citizenship. Over in France and other countries you can be BOTH without making it a federal case. There are American Indians who claim the same thing as you are claiming. "we" invaders are never going to be good enough to be considered "Americans".

He fathered several illegitimate german children before and after the war. I lost any respect I had for the man after that little snippet came out. He flew across the Atlantic as a stunt to sell airplanes and get rich. He WAS a fancier of the Nazi's, but there were plenty of Americans who were really into the whole movement before the war.
